What is a Butt Door?

A “butt door” is a type of door that is hinged on one side only, as opposed to a “flush door” that is hinged on both sides. A butt door is usually installed in a frame that is designed to support the weight of the door on a single hinge, which is often positioned at the center of the door’s width.

Butt doors are commonly used for closets, pantries, and other interior applications where a door is desired but space is limited. They are also sometimes used as access doors to utility closets or crawl spaces. Butt doors can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, metal, and plastic. They can be installed to swing inward or outward, depending on the space available and the desired function of the door. However, because butt doors are hinged on one side only, they may be more prone to warping or sagging over time, especially if they are made from a softer material such as wood. As such, regular maintenance and adjustments may be required to keep the door functioning properly.
