What is a Pilaster?

A pilaster is a decorative architectural element that resembles a flattened column or pillar. It is typically attached to a wall and projects slightly from the surface, adding visual interest and providing the illusion of structural support. Pilasters are often found in classical and neoclassical architectural styles and are commonly used in both interior and exterior design.

Pilasters share similarities with columns, but unlike columns, they are not freestanding and do not provide actual structural support. Instead, they are purely decorative and serve to enhance the aesthetics of a building or space. Pilasters are usually rectangular or square in shape and feature a base, a shaft, and a capital, similar to a column.
