What is a Primer Coat?

A primer coat, also known simply as a primer, is a preparatory coating applied to a surface before the actual paint or finish is applied. Its purpose is to provide a stable, even surface for the paint or finish to adhere to and to enhance the durability and appearance of the finished product.

Primers come in a variety of types and formulations, including oil-based, water-based, and shellac-based, and are available in a range of colors to complement or contrast with the final finish. They can be used on a variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, plaster, and drywall, and are especially useful for sealing porous surfaces and covering up stains, knots, and other imperfections. A good primer coat can help to improve the coverage, adhesion, and durability of the final finish and can also help to reduce the number of coats required to achieve the desired result.
