What is Grain Variation?

Grain variation refers to the natural differences in the texture and pattern of the fibers within a particular species of wood. Even within a single board of wood, there can be noticeable differences in grain pattern, color, and texture, as well as the size and spacing of the growth rings.

Grain variation is considered a desirable characteristic in many types of woodworking, as it can give a piece of furniture or cabinetry a unique and individual character. However, it can also present challenges in terms of matching the color and pattern of different pieces of wood, especially when trying to create a uniform look.

Woodworkers and manufacturers of wood products will often sort and grade their wood according to its level of grain variation, with more consistent or “clear” grades being used for applications where uniformity is important, and more varied or “character” grades being used for applications where a more rustic or distinctive look is desired.
